Dreaming of a Utopias Society
I’m a beer snob, but not a very accomplished one. I favor high-end grocery store brands like Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada, which places me squarely in the mortgage-paying middle-class of beer drinkers. We’re the people who never miss an opportunity to turn up our noses at the welfare-lager masses with their tasteless MGDs and Coors Lights – but don’t quite have the conviction to keep our fridges stocked like those high-falutin’ craft-brew jet-setters.

Still, I’m a striver. I believe in the American dream of upward mobility, even when it applies to premium booze. Especially when it applies to premium booze.

So imagine my delight when a limited-run bottle of Samuel Adams Utopias appears under my tree for Christmas. Released bi-yearly and priced like a premium cognac ($150), Utopias is the winter’s must-have tipple, bar none. For a bourgeois beer-drinker like myself, owning a bottle is like getting temporary use of Puff Daddy’s Bentley.

Brewery Mahou

Mahou beer ($9 per 6-pack) — Your Imbiber spent some time searching for romance in Spain in the early 90s, and fell head over heels for that country’s most popular brew. Only recently available in the U.S., Mahou (pronounced “Mow”) is a pale and creamy lager from Madrid, with a taste that evokes memories of bright Sunday afternoons in Retiro Park. For those who’ve not been to Retiro, think Boston Common but prettier and with a whole lot more Spaniards than usual milling around.

Reviews: Sam Adams Summer Ale, Imperial White

Beer Info

Brewery Samuel Adams

Samuel Adams makes good beer. They've been doing so for a long time. And for that they should be commended (and have been, again and again and again). My only beef with Jim Koch and the fine folks from the Boston Beer Company is that they tend to spread themselves a little thin. Sam Adams' name and likeness appears on hell of a lot of different beer labels, and not all of them are up to snuff. Such is the case with the brand's latest Summer Ale. Sure, it's light and citrusy like a good summer beer ought to be. But something's missing. Zest, perhaps? Yeah, that's it. There's no zest. It certainly isn't a bad brew, but it's just... just... boring. It's the Bonnie Hunt of beers. Nothing wrong with her. Been in a lot of cool flicks. But she's a role player, not a star. (Available April through August. SRP $7.99/6-pack)

Sam redeems himself with the new Imperial White. This wheat beer is part of the company's "big beer" line, and it delivers big time. It's made with a blend of two-row Harrington, Munich and Metcalfe malts, and Hallertau Mittelfrueh Noble hops. Robust, big and certainly not boring! An intense craft brew with high alcohol content, this baby is meant to be savored like a fine wine. (Available now. $9.99/4-pack)
